GKIDS ACQUIRES NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO
“THE CASE OF HANA AND ALICE,” “GENIUS PARTY,” “GENIUS PARTY BEYOND,” AND “SUMMER DAYS WITH COO”

GKIDS, the acclaimed producer and distributor of animation for adult and family audiences, announced it has acquired North American distribution rights for the animated features THE CASE OF HANA AND ALICE and SUMMER DAYS WITH COO, as well as short film anthologies GENIUS PARTY and GENIUS PARTY BEYOND. GKIDS will release the films direct to home video in 2019.

“I am so thrilled to be able to add these films to our growing library of the best animated features from around the world,” said GKIDS’ President David Jesteadt. “This is a unique opportunity to present some of our favorite previously unreleased titles, including a beautifully emotional fantasy from Keiichi Hara, a pitch-perfect examination of teenage friendship, and two compilations of mind-bending work from some of the greatest animators working today. I look forward to sharing all of them with new audiences for the first time.”

About THE CASE OF HANA AND ALICE

When Alice transfers to a new middle school, she hears an urban legend about a student who disappeared the previous year and is suspected to have been killed by his fellow students. Even worse, Alice discovers that she lives next door to his former house, a supposedly haunted home now occupied by a reclusive classmate named Hana. Hana and Alice decide to investigate this “murder case” together, but soon find their lack of detective skills may be an obstacle, in this unusual and charming film from famed writer-director Shunji Iwai, in which a shaggy-dog mystery tale ultimately gives way to a wonderfully nuanced story of young female friendship, and the fantasies and thrills of everyday teenage life.

The all-rights deal for North America was negotiated by GKIDS’ President David Jesteadt and Mayumi Furuyama for NTV.

About GENIUS PARTY and GENIUS PARTY BEYOND

From groundbreaking animation outfit STUDIO 4°C, creators of MFKZ and the upcoming Children of the Sea, comes an extraordinary project with a simple vision: to take an all-star team of the best animators working in Japanese animation today, and give each free reign to tell a unique short story. The results are GENIUS PARTY and GENIUS PARTY BEYOND, two animated anthology films full of boundless imagination, fantastic worlds, and unique visual styles.

The all-rights deal for North America was negotiated by GKIDS’ President David Jesteadt and Ayumi Inoguchi for STUDIO 4°C.

About SUMMER DAYS WITH COO

One day, Koichi Uehara, a fourth-grader living in the suburbs of Tokyo, picks up a fossil that looks like a large stone while on his way home from school. To his surprise, he has picked up a baby Kappa (a Japanese mythical water creature), who has been asleep underground for the past 300 years. Koichi names this baby creature “Coo” and brings him to live with his family, and soon the two are inseparable friends.

However, trouble abounds as Coo struggles to adjust to life in suburban Tokyo, and begins to miss his family, leading Koichi and Coo to embark on a summer road trip adventure in search of other Kappa. Directed by Keiichi Hara (Miss Hokusai, Colorful), one of Japan’s leading animated film directors, SUMMER DAYS WITH COO is a heartwarming and magical summer adventure.

The all-rights deal for North America was negotiated by GKIDS’ CEO and Founder Eric Beckman and Shion Komatsu for Shochiku.

GKIDS ACQUIRES “ANOTHER DAY OF LIFE”

GKIDS ACQUIRES

“ANOTHER DAY OF LIFE”

NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS FROM INDIE SALES

NEW YORK (May 8, 2019) – GKIDS, the acclaimed producer and distributor of animation for adult and family audiences, announced it has acquired North American distribution rights for the adult-targeted animated feature ANOTHER DAY OF LIFE. GKIDS will release the film theatrically in 2019. Based on famed author and journalist Ryszard Kapuściński’s book of the same name, and directed by Raúl De La Fuente and Damian Nenow, ANOTHER DAY OF LIFE was an official selection of the 2018 Cannes Film Festival and has received numerous accolades, including the San Sebastien IFF Audience Award, the Goya Award for Best Animated Film and the European Film Award for Best Animated Film. The film’s rights are being sold worldwide by Indie Sales, and the all-rights deal for North America was negotiated by GKIDS’ CEO and Founder Eric Beckman and Nicolas Eschbach for Indie Sales.

“We are incredibly proud to release ANOTHER DAY OF LIFE,” said GKIDS’ President David Jesteadt. “The film brings Kapuściński’s writing to visceral life, in a thrilling story of a journalist’s obligations during war that will stay with audiences long after they leave the theater.”

SYNOPSIS

An official Cannes selection and winner of festival prizes and awards worldwide, ANOTHER DAY OF LIFE is a daringly ambitious dive into the chaos of war, based on the book by the journalist Ryszard “Ricardo” Kapuściński, one of the world’s most compelling chroniclers of conflict. Intercutting a graphically bold animation style with interviews and archival footage, the visually striking film conveys a rare immediacy as it tells of the outbreak of civil war following Angola’s independence from Portugal in 1975. Against all advice, Kapuściński is intent on driving south into the heart of the bloody conflict to find the isolated rebel leader Farrusco (a legendary figure like Kurtz in Heart of Darkness). His animated trip through corpse-strewn roads conveys an undeniable urgency, while the documentary testimony reminds us that we are watching actual history.

FROM DIRECTORS MARC JAMES ROELS AND EMMA DE SWAEF

FILM PREVIOUSLY PLAYED CANNES, TELLURIDE AND TORONTO FESTIVALS

NEW YORK (January 18, 2019) – GKIDS, the acclaimed producer and distributor of animation for adult and family audiences, announced it has acquired the North American distribution rights for the animated feature THIS MAGNIFICENT CAKE!. GKIDS will release the film theatrically in Los Angeles on March 1, 2019.

THIS MAGNIFICENT CAKE! is a mid-length stop-motion animated film set in the bitter milieu of Belgium-occupied Congo in the late 19th century that turns a critical gaze on the colonists themselves. This Magnificent Cake! is like nothing I have ever seen before,” said David Jesteadt, GKIDS’ President. “It is a triumph of filmmaking and craftsmanship, to tell a story of such power and nuance through detailed stop-motion animation. As a critical examination of a dark legacy whose effects are still being felt today, this is a timely and provocative film that has already sparked conversations at film festivals around the globe.”

“We are very happy that Marc and Emma’s film has found a home at GKIDS, which is the best place for quality animation in the US,” said Jan Naszewski, CEO of New Europe Film Sales.

SYNOPSIS

An official selection at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, Toronto International Film Festival and Telluride Film Festival, THIS MAGNIFICENT CAKE! (CE MAGNIFIQUE GÂTEAU!) is an unforgettable work of stop-motion animation exploring the bitter milieu of Belgium-occupied Congo. In the late 19th century, keen to compete with other European imperial powers on the continent, King Leopold II of Belgium proclaimed, “I do not want to miss a good chance of getting us a slice of this magnificent African cake.” The subsequent occupation of the Congo would come to attract a contingent of servants, merchants and miscellaneous bourgeois driven by everything from insatiable greed to existential fear. From the intimate stories of these characters — many of whom pass through a luxury hotel in the middle of the jungle – emerges a greater narrative concerning the imperialist mentality. In a film by turns surreal, darkly comic and brutal, directors Marc James Roels and Emma de Swaef ultimately turn their critical gaze on the colonists themselves in a work of stunning, mysterious beauty.
