From Japan’s cutting-edge STUDIO4°C (Tekkonkinkreet, MFKZ, Mind Game) and director Ayumu Watanabe comes Children of the Sea, a stunningly beautiful adaptation of the prize-winning manga. Featuring a score from legendary composer and long-time Studio Ghibli collaborator Joe Hisaishi (Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro), this critically-acclaimed film will be available digitally, as a Blu-ray  and DVD combo pack, and on DVD September 1, 2020 from GKIDS and Shout! Factory. Children of the Sea is scheduled for a nationwide theatrical release in select cinemas via Fathom Events on August 11 and 12, in subtitled and English dubbed versions, with more details to be revealed soon.

All editions of the release will include a number of bonus features, including an interview with director Ayumu Watanabe and CGI director Kenichiro Akimoto, an interview with composer Joe Hisaishi, a behind the scenes featurette, animatic sequences, and more! The Blu-rayand DVD Combo pack will also include the exclusive “Turep – Looking for Children of the Sea”, a feature-length pseudo-documentary from the creators of Children of the Sea that explores the legends that inspired the film and engages with its larger themes. Framed as a search for a lost brother with an affinity for the sea, this journey takes a young woman through old videotapes, conversations with marine and anthropological experts, and eventually, a small island nation far from Japan.  Fans can pre-order their copies now by visiting ShoutFactory.com

When Ruka was younger, she saw a ghost in the water at the aquarium where her dad worked. Now she feels drawn toward the aquarium and the two mysterious boys she meets there, Umi and Sora, who were raised by dugongs and hear the same strange calls from the sea as she does. As the kids get caught up in the mystery behind the sudden worldwide disappearance of the ocean’s fish, they uncover cosmic connections that will change them forever.

GKIDS has announced the North American virtual theatrical release of Marona’s Fantastic Tale, from director Anca Damian. Starting June 12, 2020, the film, which played in competition at the Annecy International Film Festival, and won the Animation is Film Special Jury Prize last year, will be made available at MaronaMovie.com through virtual cinema partner links. In addition to the film, exclusive to the virtual release includes additional interview content with director Anca Damian.

Initial virtual cinema partners include the Laemmle Theaters in Los Angeles and The Museum of the Moving Image in New York City, with additional partner theaters and organizations to be added. A percentage of the net proceeds of every ‘ticket’ sold will go to listed partner theaters and related organizations. Through these virtual cinema affiliate links, audiences can enjoy this exciting new release from the comfort of their homes, while supporting their local art house cinema and other local partners.

SYNOPSIS
The poetic and touching film from director Anca Damian follows an optimistic stray dog named Marona as she looks back on the human companions she has loved throughout her life. Delivered alongside dazzlingly colorful, sweeping designs produced in part by acclaimed artist Brecht Evens, Marona’s Fantastic Tale is a life-affirming tale told with the patient, boundless love of a dog, and reminds us that happiness is a small thing.

Tickets are on sale now for “Children of the Sea,” the latest feature from Japan’s STUDIO4°C (known for “Tekkonkinkreet,” “MFKZ,” “Mind Game,” “Animatrix, Batman: Gotham Knight,” and others). Directed by Ayumu Watanabe (“Space Brothers”), featuring a score by award-winning composer and longtime Studio Ghibli collaborator Joe Hisaishi (“Spirited Away,” “Howl’s Moving Castle,” “My Neighbor Totoro”). The gorgeously animated “Children of the Sea” is adapted from Daisuke Igarashi’s manga of the same name, which won the Excellence Prize at the Japan Media Arts Festival.

In addition to the full feature, audiences will view a special interview with Ayumu Watanabe and CGI director Kenichiro Akimoto.

SYNOPSIS

When Ruka was younger, she saw a ghost in the water at the aquarium where her dad works. Now she feels drawn toward the aquarium and the two mysterious boys she meets there, Umi and Sora. On Friday, March 13, GKIDS presents a brand new restoration of visionary director Satoshi Kon’s critically-acclaimed animated feature, TOKYO GODFATHERS, at the Metrograph Theater in New York and the Lumiere Music Hall in Los Angeles. This theatrical re-release showcases a new English-language dub produced by GKIDS and NYAV Post with the voices of Jon Avner (Just Cause 3), Victoria Grace (Mirai), and Shakina Nayfack (“Transparent,” “Difficult People”).

In modern-day Tokyo, three homeless people’s lives are changed forever when they discover a baby girl at a garbage dump on Christmas Eve. As the New Year fast approaches, these three forgotten members of society band together to solve the mystery of the abandoned child and the fate of her parents. Along the way, encounters with seemingly unrelated events and people force them to confront their own haunted pasts, as they learn to face their future, together. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Paprika), written by Kon and Keiko Nobumoto (Cowboy Bebop) and featuring a whimsical score by Keiichi Suzuki, TOKYO GODFATHERS is a masterpiece by turns heartfelt, hilarious and highly original, a tale of hope and redemption in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.

GKIDS and Fathom Events also presents special fan screenings of TOKYO GODFATHERS on March 9 and March 11. The March 9 screenings will be subtitled, while the March 11 screenings will feature the new English-language dub. All fan preview screenings of TOKYO GODFATHERS will screen at 7:00 p.m. local time.
