Welcome back to GKIDS Unboxed! Today, we’ll be looking at the supernatural, romantic tearjerker, Ride Your Wave.
In his latest feature, Yuasa brings his trademark visual ingenuity to a deeply emotional tale of love, grief and self-discovery. When cheerful surfer girl Hinako’s new apartment catches fire, she’s rescued by handsome firefighter Minato. Sparks fly, and just as they become inseparable, Minato loses his life in an accident at sea. Hinako is so distraught that she can no longer even look at the ocean, but one day she sings a song that reminds her of their time together, and Minato appears in the water. From then on, she can summon him in any watery surface as soon as she sings their song.
Ride Your Wave is the latest film from visionary director Masaaki Yuasa, producer Eunyoung Choi, and animation studio Science SARU – known for their colorful hits like Lu Over The Wall, The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl, and Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken, as well as eccentric and daring works like Devilman CRYBABY and Japan Sinks 2020.
Hear directly from Ride Your Wave producer and Science SARU CEO Eunyoung Choi about the studio’s development from a one-room apartment to supporting a staff of 70+ people. Plus, hear Choi’s insights into developing talent at Science SARU and what it’s like to work with Yuasa on the film.
The Japanese voice cast is helmed by J-Pop royalty, including Ryôta Katayose (GENERATIONS from EXILE TRIBE) and Rina Kawaei (AKB48) as Minato and Hinako, with Katayose also lending his voice to hit theme song in “Brand New Story,” performed by GENERATIONS from EXILE TRIBE. In the exclusive director’s statement, hear from director Yuasa on finding the perfect voices for the two leads, and how he worked with Katayose and Kawaei on bringing them to life.
Exclusive to the home video release is an all new English language version of the film, featuring the voices of Joey Richter (A Very Potter Musical) as Minato, Merit Leighton (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power) as Hinako, Sarah Williams (Kill la Kill, Puella Magi Madoka Magica) as Yoko, and Michael Johnston (Teen Wolf) as Wasabi.
In addition to the all-star voice cast, Yuasa once again collaborates with the best in the industry, with a screenplay by Reiko Yoshida (The Cat Returns, Okko’s Inn), and music from Michiru Oshima (Little Witch Academia, The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl, Fullmetal Alchemist).
